GT Freshman Survival Guide
Exam Tips
-
Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to get to class on exam day. You may need the full time to finish your exam. There’s not a minute to waste! Also, it’s hard to do your best when you’re trying to catch your breath from running halfway across campus.
-
Bring your BuzzCard to the exam. Some professors/TA look at it to verify your identity.
-
If you’re taking a long exam, eat a snack or light meal beforehand. Testing on an empty stomach will distract you and you won’t be able to do your best.
-
Some teachers give partial credit, so make sure to show all of your work if it’s not multiple choice.
-
Don’t stay up the entire night before cramming. At some point, the extra studying will no longer help and sleep is more important!
-
Study smart. Even if you spend hours studying, if you’re looking at your phone for half of the time you’re not going to learn any of the information. Put your devices on airplane mode if you really can’t trust yourself to stay away.
-
Study with classmates. It’s very helpful to bounce ideas off peers and get a better understanding of the topics. Plus, they’ll keep you focused (if they’re good study partners, that is.)
-
Don’t be afraid to ask questions when studying! Go to office hours, participate during class, and ask TA’s if they have past exams that you can look review. Also, professors will be much more inclined to round that 89.44444 at the end of the semester if you’ve shown a legitimate interest in their classes.
-
Bring the supplies you need for the exam including pens, pencils, a laptop, or a calculator. For CS majors, do NOT download and install Java ten minutes before your exam.
-
Don’t stress! You’re smart and you will succeed if you prepare correctly. On the day of the exam, take a deep breath and do your best. That’s all anyone can ask for.
