Laundry

Doing laundry in college may seem like a daunting task to some students, especially for those who haven’t had to do their own wash in the past. Luckily, these simple steps explain the ins and outs of doing laundry at Tech.*

  • Locate the nearest laundry room. East and West campus have multiple laundry locations which are usually found in the residence halls. If students need help finding a laundry room, peer leaders (PLs) and residence advisors (RAs) are always available to help.

  • Gather supplies. To do laundry, students need to have the following items: a BuzzCard with a supply of BuzzFunds ($3 should be more than enough), laundry detergent or pods, and a hamper or bag to carry clothes in. I also recommend dryer sheets, but they are optional.

  • Take dirty clothes, towels, or sheets to the laundry room along with the other previously listed supplies. (I recommend separating wash into darks/colors, whites, towels, and sheets. This step is optional and some students wash all clothes in one load.)

  • Select desired laundry machines and put clothes inside. The laundry detergent is poured into the first slot on the image shown below. The laundry pods can also be put into this slot or they can be put directly into the machine on top of the clothes. (See below)

  • Take note of the numbers on the machines. Once the dirty clothes have been loaded, locate the machine to pay for laundry time.  (See Figure 2a and 2b)

    • Select the number that matches with the machine chosen.

    • Click on number.

    • Swipe BuzzCard.

    • Now that the laundry is paid for, return to the machine and press the button that matches with type of laundry being done. For example, if darks are being washed press the color button.

  • When the laundry is finished, the door will unlock. Switch clothes from the washer to a desired dryer. Don’t forget to remove the lint from the filter before drying clothes.

  • Take note of the number on the chosen dryer(s). Locate the machine to pay for laundry time. (See Figure 3)

    • Select number that matches with the machine chosen.

    • Click on number.

    • If the BuzzCard is swiped at this point, ten minutes of drying time will be selected; however, I recommend drying clothes for at least thirty minutes. To select more time, click add time. Each click adds ten minutes of time to the initial 10 minutes.

    • Once the desired amount of time is reached, swipe BuzzCard.

  • Drying time is now paid for. Return to the dryer and click the button that matches with the type of clothes being dried. If more than ten minutes of drying time were selected, then the button will have to be clicked multiple times until the total time is reached. (Figure 4)

  • Once clothes are dried, it’s time to take them back to the dorm. Use a hamper or bag to transfer clothes if you don’t want to lose articles of clothing on the way. (And if you don’t want to carry your laundry back to your room in five loads.)

*Disclaimer: These steps are tailored for laundry rooms with electronic paying stations, but they should work for other laundry rooms as well.
